Todd and April Lee’s dreams of building a family home were shattered on Saturday, the
The Callala Beach residents were hoping to start building a home for themselves and their daughters Violet, five, and Rose, five months, in two weeks’ time.
The house, a three-bedroom kit home from Wide Span Sheds, was delivered to the couple’s vacant land in McKay Street, Nowra 10 days ago.
The delivery included frames, trusses, roof and wall sheeting.
After speaking with neighbours around the property the couple believe the house was stolen in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Mrs Lee said their development application was approved three weeks ago.
“Todd had been keeping a close eye on the house kit,” she said.
“Since it was delivered he had been sleeping on the site to make sure nothing was taken.
“He ended up getting sick and so didn’t sleep at the land for two nights – that was when everything was taken.
“It was pouring rain on Saturday night but some neighbours heard and saw something happening at about 3.30am.
“One neighbour saw what they said looked like an orange car trailer and others heard what they thought were road workers, and a truck but thought nothing more of it as there had recently been road works in the area.
“Another neighbour saw three men in hoodies in our street at about 4am,” Mrs Lee said.
The first the couple knew their house had been stolen was when a friend who had driven past phoned Mr Lee on Sunday notifying him that he could not see where all the parts of the house were.
“Todd phoned me and I went straight to the land,” Mrs Lee said.
“When I saw it was missing I went straight to the neighbours to ask about it.
“I think I was in shock, I think I still am.
“Then I phoned Todd and just said it’s gone.
“I couldn’t say anything else, I just felt blank.
“We were just walking around in circles – I didn’t think anyone would steal a whole house.
“People ask me if it was insured, but it wasn’t, we just didn’t think we could insure it until it was up to lockup stage.
“Now we have no way to borrow more money until we have footings down.
“We’re just in debt with nothing to show for it.”
Mrs Lee’s mother, Annette Wood, has started a campaign of getting the word out, over Facebook, the media and speaking with people.
“Someone knows about this. It was a big job and it has been well planned,” she said.
“I think whoever did this has been watching the site for a while waiting for their chance,” she said.
It has been a rough start for this young family.
Mrs Lee was the victim of a head-on collision on Gerroa Road in 2008.
She was 20 weeks pregnant at the time and the accident resulted in her losing all of her amniotic fluid.
She spent six weeks in hospital and had the baby nine weeks premature.
“I was afraid I was going to give birth to a dead baby.
“She [the baby] was in hospital for six weeks after the birth,” Mrs Lee said.
Injuries from the collision meant Mrs Lee was not able to carry a baby to full term.
However the couple now have two healthy daughters.
Mrs Lee is currently on maternity leave and was hoping to have her home built by the time she returned to work in September.
Police are investigating the theft.
