The number of students first preferencing UOW by November 30 was 3417, down from 3654 at the same time last year.
UOW Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor John Patterson said the figures were an early indicator only as students had yet to receive their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). A clearer picture on preference decisions would not be known until after students gained their ATARs and started making final decisions.
"UOW is unique in NSW for having UAC and mature age direct applications into its bachelor degrees," Prof Patterson said.
"Undergraduate direct applications are so far showing an increase of 7 per cent . . . while mature age direct postgraduate applications are up 17 per cent."
