Former NSW Liberal leader Kerry Chikarovski said bureaucrats generally did not deserve a bad reputation and were working to the rules because of the intense scrutiny they were under as public servants.
As the director of Chikarovski and Associates, a government-relations consultancy, Mrs Chikarovski deals with bureaucrats and both sides of Parliament on a daily basis and much of her advice to business is how to find and deal with the right people.
She told an Illawarra Connections dinner that it was important to understand there were systems and processes to follow.
‘‘Because at the end of the day what we want to do, what you want to do and really what governments and bureaucracies want to do is they want to grow your businesses. We want successful businesses in this country.’’
Mrs Chikarovski said that with a federal election in September, now was a good time for businesses and business bodies in regions such as the Illawarra to approach their local members with ideas.
Both sides of Federal Parliament, particularly the opposition several months out from an election, were looking for ideas and finalising policies, she said.
