Everyone needs a ‘‘blond’’ adventure at some stage in their life and Walter Immoos has taken his blond moment to a new height as he faces his demons with Highlights for Hope.
His new blond statement actually highlights a very real statement from deep in his heart, one that has remained unspoken for too long.
Walter, like so many, has suffered the sadness of his brother’s suicide attempt and until this week, had held his story to himself, buried deep in a dark and lonely corner of his soul.
Highlights for Hope has opened a door that has been jammed for too long on the painful experiences, suffered by so many mental health victims and their loved ones.
Walter has sent a long overdue, courageous message to our community, one that seeks the freedom that should be any sufferer’s right . . . to speak out, seek help and share a story.
Equally, the community needs to feel the same freedom to embrace any opportunity to listen and show compassion to the ever increasing victims of mental health disorders. We do it openly for other charities, disabilities and diseases.
I have high hopes that this great new initiative and partnership with the hairdressing industry will do just that.
Launching in 20 Highlights for Hope salons this week, hairdressers will raise awareness and the support that mental health so desperately needs and deserves.
I have been so heartened by the generous spirit and enthusiasm of the salons that have joined hands to spearhead this important campaign and will be selling raffle tickets for great prizes in their salons, to raise these much needed funds for the Light and Hopes Clubhouse in Wollongong.
Tomma Giorgio, proprietor of Colours salon, North Wollongong, joined me in our quest to transform Walter to a blond at her salon.
Tomma used Biosthetique brand, a quality French colour that was gentle on the scalp yet really effective in its ability to lift evenly and do the job.
The full colour service, including the lightening of the moustache, was completed with a style cut under two hours. The condition was exceptional.
When I asked Tomma what has been most important to her over the years in her salon practice she said: ‘‘My greatest satisfaction comes from making people feel happy.’’
Does that not say it all about the hairdressers!
