VIDEO, PHOTOS: More bones found near Otford

The bones were found during a search of dense rainforest by police aided by 40 State Emergency Service volunteers.

Police established a crime scene in the park  following the discovery of the skull near Lady Wakehurst Drive.

Machetes were used to clear scrub during Friday's search, with some police using harnesses to descend steep embankments.

Police divers also took to the water to search a nearby creek.

Officers took several objects away from the scene in brown paper bags about midday. 

Wollongong Acting Inspector Dan Richardson said the bones found on Friday would be sent away for forensic examination.

‘‘We need to confirm whether they’re animal or human,’’ Insp Richardson said.

A bushwalker uncovered the skull about 2.15pm on Monday and alerted authorities.

A police spokeswoman said initial forensic analysis had been completed on the skull and further testing was being conducted.

SES Wollongong team leader Greg Nash said volunteers had been sourced from Canterbury and Sydney to support local units in yesterday’s operation.

He said volunteers were trained to use specialist techniques to conduct searches in difficult situations.

‘‘We provide our members with training in land search skills and missing persons,’’ Mr Nash said.

The SES command centre was established at the Red Cedar Flat parking area, about four kilometres north of Bald Hill.

Volunteers were called off soon after making Friday's discovery.

National Parks and Wildlife rangers also provided assistance to police.

Traffic control was established and motorists were warned to slow down while passing the crime scene.

Police will continue to guard the scene over the weekend before the search resumes on Monday.
