Member for Throsby Stephen Jones has shown his colours, joining the line-up of great Illawarrians who have been supporting Mental Health Month through the new initiative being extended by Illawarra's 20 leading hairdressers.
Stephen took time out from his busy schedule to sport a patch of blue at Wollongong's Unity Hair.
Proprietor Victoria Marcs, a pint-sized dynamo, took over the salon five years ago. A hairdresser for more than 20 years, Vic also teaches one day a week at the Elite Hair and Beauty Academy in Wollongong.
One of her Unity Hair stylists, Shannon O'Neil, was a finalist in the NSW Face of IHS and won third place in a recent international cut and colour competition.
One of the best designs I've seen, Vic's contemporary salon features a stunning and functional double-sided linear island work station that really works. With her team of six, Vic believes much of her success can be attributed to really listening to the clients' needs.
"One of the comments I hear repeatedly is that we really 'get the picture' or words to that effect. When a client is looking for something new and modern, but a style that can be managed in-between salon visits, there is always a challenge combining these elements to get it right," Vic says.
"We take the time to look at age, lifestyle, work image, individual hair and facial features and, of course, manageability before we decide on the new look. Cut and colour combines today in so many 'edgy' ways from smart conservative to very contemporary and even playful.
"Clients have become far more adventurous in trying something new these days which is a great thing. Hair is something we
can all have fun with from
time to time," she emphasises.
Even Stephen, one of Vic's more conservative clients, was keen to comment on his colour adventure this week.
"I have happily embraced this opportunity to 'do some blue' and highlight my show of support to this important fund-raising cause. I urge the community to support the Highlights for Hope Salons in support of the Light and Hope Clubhouse in the Illawarra.
"I believe this partnership with the salons has already raised awareness and we are all talking more openly," he says.
Vic says hairdressers are compassionate by nature and most are natural counsellors.
"We definitely contribute to enriching the lives of our clients, so I am confident we can really help make a difference to the many people affected by mental health through this initiative.
"It is a real privilege to be one of the Highlights for Hope salons."
