Robert Allenby retains sole membership of Australian tour golf's most exclusive club but he believes far greater honours remain in store for Adam Scott on the world stage.

Scott missed a golden opportunity to join Allenby as the only other player to complete a summer Triple Crown of Australia's big three tournaments when he squandered a four-shot final-round lead at the Australian Open on Sunday.

Allenby, though, suspects it's only a matter of time before Scott relieves Tiger Woods of his world No 1 ranking and has tipped Australia's first US Masters champion to win at least three more majors.

"If I had to welcome anyone into the [Triple Crown] club, it'd be Scotty," Allenby said.

"He's unquestionably the world's best player at the moment.

"He's been playing some amazing golf, really for the last 2½ years.

"He could have won the Masters in 2011, he could have won the past two British Opens and should have won at Lytham [in 2012].

"So he could have won four majors by now.

"But, don't worry, it will happen."

Rory McIlroy hailed Scott as "arguably the best player in the world at the moment" after stealing the Stonehaven Cup from underneath the Queenslander's nose at Royal Sydney.

Woods would no doubt have something to say about that after capturing a world-best five titles in 2013, all on the US PGA Tour.

Scott won four tournaments this year - including a major - plus the first FedEx Cup play-off in America and has cut Woods' rankings lead over the world No 2 in half with two victories, a second and a third at the World Cup over the Australian summer.

Scott will now enjoy a few weeks' well-earned rest before opening his 2014 assault on Woods' top ranking at the Tournament of Championships in Hawaii from January 2-6.

Golf officials estimate the Australian will probably need to win two tournaments on the US PGA Tour - without Woods winning one - to become Australia's first world No 1 since Woods usurped Greg Norman in January 1998.

"It's been a dream of mine, like it's a dream of every other kid's to be No 1 and I'm as close as I've ever been," Scott said.

"I'm not going to stop dreaming of it just because Tiger Woods holds the No 1 spot.

"But we all know how difficult it is to surpass him. Only a few people have done it in the last 15 years and I've got my work cut out for me the whole of next year in trying to do that.

"Tiger won't want to give up that No 1 spot very easy either, so he'll be off working on it.

"It doesn't take much to motivate him to want to put someone back in their place."

Regardless if he gets to No 1 or not, Norman yesterday commended Scott for revitalising Australian golf.

"I thank Adam Scott for reenergizing golf in #australia." Norman tweeted.

"His incredible run downunder was impressive. Oz golf now in gr8 hands + JDayGolf."
