The Sydney Brazilian Social Club performed on and off the pitch at the Johnny Warren Cup at Jamberoo on the weekend.
Organisers were hoping to foster a Brazilian flavour at the tournament ahead of this year’s World Cup and Canarinhos provided it, taking out the over-40s men’s division in style.
‘‘They won last year and they defended their title this year,’’ organiser Jamie Warren said.
‘‘They certainly brought the atmosphere and their well-known love of music and dance to Jamberoo and they took out the football as well.’’
Kings Cross FC took out the men’s over-35s in their tournament debut, beating Jamberoo Pub in the final.
‘‘It was the first time Kings Cross had played at Jamberoo,’’ Warren said.
‘‘I met them at the Les Murray Cup and I asked them to come to Jamberoo for the Johnny Warren.
‘‘They didn’t expect anything other than to come down and have a good time, and they ended up winning the tournament.’’
Local side Gerringong took out the women’s over-35s and Warren said the organisers are already planning to expand the women’s draw next year.
‘‘It was fantastic weekend with record numbers,’’ Warren said.
‘‘This year we played the Friday and Saturday, and next year with the increased numbers we’ll continue into the Sunday.
‘‘We’re looking to build the women’s side of the tournament because that was really well received.
‘‘We had six [women’s] teams, so next year we’d like to do an opens and an over-30s. There’s a big push in women’s football.
‘‘We’ll be looking to really push the women’s tournament because there are so many women playing.’’
