GALLERY: Pancake Day fun at St Brigid's

Year 1 students at St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School had sore arms and full bellies yesterday afternoon after a busy morning making, and eating, pancakes.

The Gwynneville students were among many across the region who prepared and devoured pancakes for morning tea to mark Shrove Tuesday, the day that precedes the beginning of Lent, the fasting period before Easter.

The class gave their arm muscles a vigorous workout, taking turns shaking the bottles of pancake mix before their teacher, Claire Shrimpton, cooked them.

‘‘Mrs Shrimpton, you’re burning them,’’ said one concerned student when the pancakes hit the sizzling pan.

The students were divided as to whether jam was an acceptable topping, while a few professed to not liking pancakes at all.

Despite the giggles of excitement, the significance of the day was not lost on the class. Henry Jones, 6, explained they celebrated Shrove Tuesday and Lent to remember the 40 days Jesus spent facing temptation in the desert.

He had a double hit of pancakes yesterday, eating them for breakfast too, and has promised to keep his bedroom tidier during Lent.
