An 18-year-old woman was airlifted to St George Hospital with neck and back pain after the car she was travelling in crashed into a tree at Otford.
The incident happened around 11.30am when a black Honda Integra travelling south along Lady Wakehurst Drive, just north of Bald Hill, ran off the road and travelled at least five metres into bushland.
After hitting a tree, the car came to rest on a slight embankment with the tree up against from passenger door.
The driver, an 18-year-old male, was out of the vehicle when emergency crews arrived but the 18-year-old female was still trapped in the passenger seat.
The ambulance rescue helicopter was called to the scene and landed at Bald Hill.
Meanwhile, Fire and Rescue NSW crews cut away the driver’s side door and roof of the car to allow paramedics access to the female passenger.
She was placed on a spinal board and then onto a stretcher and conveyed to the waiting helicopter.
The rescue helicopter then flew her to St George Hospital.
It is understood that the male driver was also injured but the extent of his injuries is not yet known.
Wollongong police is investigating the accident and said the driver was assisting them with their inquiries.
