NSW Premier Mike Baird congratulated the Kiama MP, noting the result spoke volumes about the respect and esteem his colleagues have for his capacity and ability.
“Gareth is well regarded by MPs and he has done a fantastic job as an Acting Speaker," he said.
"He has also been a highly effective chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters.”
Mr Ward said he was looking forward to the challenge of his new role.
“I am deeply honoured by the decision of the Party Room today," he said.
"I am also very humbled to have been elected unopposed.
“I recognise that this role comes with enormous responsibility both in and outside of Parliament and I’m looking forward to this new challenge.
But Mr Ward added his electorate should rest assured that his first and foremost commitment would always be to his community.
"I came to Parliament to fight for the funds and services we need and this passion for our community grows stronger every day I have the enormous privilege to serve," he said.
Well wishes streamed in for Mr Ward via social media including a tongue-in-cheek comment from Labor Member for Keira Ryan Park.
