Sergeant Colin Stevenson's helpful nature recalled at funeral

More than 1000 mourners packed into the Church of Christ at Figtree on Monday to farewell Sergeant Colin Stevenson, an officer attached to Wollongong police command.

Sgt Stevenson, who was 57, died in hospital on May 23 after a long battle with illness.

He spent 25 years with the police force, working directly out of offices in Campbelltown and Dapto.

Wollongong police inspector Brian Wyver said Sgt Stevenson was an active member of the community, giving much of his time to the Bellambi Surf Club.

‘‘He was a really lovely fellow, liked by all and with a good sense of humour,’’ Insp Wyver said.

‘‘He was just one of those genuine people who wanted to help in the community.

‘‘That was shown through his involvement at the surf club.

‘‘It was a sad occasion.’’

Members of the Police Force and NSW Ambulance who attended the funeral wore their uniforms as a mark of respect.
