Queen's Birthday Honours

Nine people across the Illawarra have been recognised for years of community service with a Queen's honour award on Monday.

Corrimal's Cecil Ainsworth becomes a Member of the Order of Australia for his non-profit, social welfare and health insurance work throughout the Illawarra.

Sally Stevenson, from Mount Pleasant, is recognised for her social welfare work in Australia and overseas, as well as her commitment to government programs and charities.

Thirroul's Gary Chapman receives a Medal of the Order of Australia for his contribution to surf lifesaving. And Balgownie's Charles Goodwin is acknowledged for his many contributions to the region, such as founding the Wollongong City Council aerial patrol.

Historian Carol Herbern has been a champion of local history and i98fm Camp Quality Convoy creator Marty Haynes is recognised for his support of community health and cancer organisations.

Wollongong couple Anne and John Brennan Keats put Australian music on the map with their publishing company and receive an award for the effort.

An Australian Fire Service Medal goes to Malcolm Connellan from Kiama Downs for more than 30 years' service to Fire and Rescue NSW.

Gerringong man Captain Simon Bateman was "very humbled" to receive the Conspicuous Service Cross for outstanding achievement as director general of Navy communications and co-ordination.

In his former role, he organised key Navy events, liased with ministerial offices and oversaw the Navy's internet and social media presence.

Captain Bateman is now the Commanding Officer of HMAS Albatross in Nowra .

He has previously received the Australian Active Service Medal, Iraq Medal, Afghanistan Medal, Australian Operation Service Medal - Border Protection and the Defence Force Service Medal.
