Three patients were taken to Wollongong Hospital suffering minor injuries following the collision, which happened about 1.10pm.
An elderly woman was “stuck” in the back seat of one of the vehicles before members of the public came to her aid.
A driver involved in the crash, who did not want to be identified, said people in the first vehicle were “shaken up”.
“We just jumped out and ran to the front car,” he said. “There were some old people, we made sure they were all right.
“Everything happened really quickly.”
Witness Linda Fryer said she heard a loud bang, followed by the sound of four cars smashing into each other. “I grabbed the phone and called the ambulance straight away,” she said. “Then I ran out the front… it was all smoke.
“Everyone was still in their cars – people came out of their shops and just started assisting the injured.”
A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said one of the patients taken to hospital was an elderly woman with chest injuries.
