Police said the family’s car was parked near the corner of Railway Street and the Princes Highway about 5pm when the light pole ‘‘fell down of its own accord’’, smashing the back windows.
There were wind gusts of between 50-60km/h recorded at Bellambi Point weather station around the time of the accident, however it is not known if wind was responsible for bringing down the pole.
The pole fell across both lanes of the highway, bringing traffic to a standstill for almost an hour as Fire and Rescue NSW and Endeavour Energy worked to turn off power and remove it from the road.
