Robert Sharrock, 31, did not apply for bail and it was formally refused during a brief appearance in Port Kembla Local Court on Tuesday.
Sharrock is accused of using a Leatherman knife to hold up the taxi between 3.30am and 4am, stealing $250 before making off with the Wollongong Radio Cabs taxi as well.
The taxi was later found abandoned on Swamp Road in Jamberoo.
Defence lawyer Jonathan Kearney asked the court to recommend his client receive attention for mental health issues while on remand, saying Sharrock had had ‘‘significant suicidal thoughts’’ since entering custody.
Magistrate Mark Richardson agreed to the request and adjourned the matter to October 22 for further mention.
