Rising Wollongong judo star Tegan David is planning a tilt at the Pan Pacific Championships next month after bringing home an impressive double gold from the Australian Kodokan Judo National.
The 16-year-old picked up gold in the juniors category and backed up to claim gold in the senior women’s under 55kgs division, winning all six of her bouts in both classes.
‘‘She won all her fights by full points, even getting one opponent to tap out [submit] when she applied an arm bar on her,’’ coach Mick Cutajar said.
‘‘In the senior competition Tegan was not only the youngest competitor, but also the lowest graded with an orange belt so that alone was a great effort.’’
David said she exceeded even her own expectations in claiming gold in the senior division after entering merely to gain valuable experience.
“I have been training all year for nationals and have spent a lot of time watching Judo fights to improve my technique,’’ she said.
‘‘I chose to enter the senior’s competition as it was a chance to challenge myself even further, a new experience. It was so scary fronting up to the event with older, more experienced competitors, but I knew the coaching that my Sensei, Mick Cutajar had provided me with, and the support and coaching I had on the day from [fellow club member], Logan Gonzalez, I had the skills and support to do well. I just didn’t realise how well.
‘‘It was a very rewarding experience, and after winning my gold medal I couldn’t stop smiling.’’
Tegan’s double capped a golden weekend for the David family with younger brother Samuel also claiming gold in the 13 years age division.
‘‘Sam won all his five fights quickly and finished with a long hard fight to win gold in his age division,’’ Cutajar said.
‘‘Sam had only just finished the football season then jumped at the chance contest the nationals.’’
David, along with teammates Steve Arneman, Markus Pfau and Jacqueline Steward will travel to Japan in December for the Osaka International under the tutelege Cutajar who is reigning champion from 2012 event.
The team will use the Pan Pacific Championships on the Gold Coast on November 3 as preparation for the trip.
