ARU boss Bill Pulver says he has not spoken to another coach about filling the void left by Ewen McKenzie, who announced his resignation as Wallabies coach on Saturday night.

Pulver held a press conference on Sunday morning with Wallabies captain Michael Hooper and said he was concerned by the treatment of McKenzie throughout the past few weeks and said there was no evidence that the players had lost respect for the former Queensland Reds coach.

He did not make any announcements about a new coach.

Pulver said he would spend the next few days trying to find one and at this stage doesn't know "who could even get on a plane" when the Wallabies depart on Friday for their spring tour of Europe.

"I have had no conversations with any other coaches about this prospect," Pulver said.

"I've got a list of options in mind and I've got a lot of work to do. I did not expect Ewen McKenzie to resign. I found out about it at 10am.

"The rest of this today is trying to understand where we sit in terms of the options we've got and trying to make some progress."

Pulver revealed did not know McKenzie was planning to resign and said that, in his opinion, it was the wrong decision.

"I wasn't eager to accept the coach's resignation," Pulver said.

"I do think the media situation that Ewen was embroiled in clearly had a role to play. Ewen, like all of us, is a human being and the pressures that come from being a Wallabies coach are unique as they are, let alone additional external pressures that came from all of that rumour and innuendo."

Hooper threw his support behind McKenzie, highlighting the team's effort against the All Blacks on Saturday night, in which the Wallabies fell 29-28 to the All Blacks after a last-ditch try at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

"I dont think he lost the respect of the players," Hooper said.

"He really showed what he's worth and we played for him. We play for the staff and everyone as a group. We play as a whole."
