Women with neatly styled up dos and painted lips posed next to the assembled Chevrolets and Oldsmobiles, while other browsed the retro market stalls or shook their tail feather on the dance floor.
Festival organiser Miss Elaine said around 1000 people turned up for the event, which follows on the tail of an equally successful launch earlier this year.
Rockabilly culture, dance and vintage dress are enjoying a resurgence in popularity - something the Illawarra should not miss out on, Miss Elaine said.
‘‘It’s something a bit different for down here, because we don’t really have much of it in the Illawarra. It’s popular with [Illawarra] people but they usually go to other places for it,’’ she said.
‘‘For our best dressed competition we had so many people we ran out of tickets for them - and a lot of people came in their vintage dresses, even if they weren’t entering.’’
The event attracted visitors from Sydney, Newcastle and Canberra.
