Wollongong City Council should use the $7.7 million it gained from selling off two large northern suburbs blocks to inject funds back into those communities, the Corrimal Chamber of Commerce says.

Chamber president Paul Boultwood said Corrimal was crying out for revitalisation projects like Wollongong’s façade upgrade program or the Wonderwalls street art festival and believed the council should funnel $3.175 million from the sale of the Underwood Street car park directly into the town.
“This money has come from the proceeds of a sale in our area, so it should stay here,” Mr Boultwood said.
The 5254 square metre Corrimal car park was sold at an auction last week along with a large block of industrial land at Russell Vale, which went for $4.6 million.
Mr Boultwood said there were many areas in the lower northern suburbs which could benefit from a share of these funds.
‘‘It could be Corrimal, Woonona, Bulli or Bellambi - maybe we could even put CCTV at the Bellambi Surf Club,” he said.
‘‘We would like to see the Wonderwalls project in Corrimal, and we’d also like to see an extension of Memorial Park and an improvement to the facades and painting of businesses.’’
‘‘We’re not asking for anything different from what Wollongong has got with the revitalisation of the mall and the Blue Mile.”
When asked about the plans for the $7.7 million, a council spokesman said it would “take some time for the council to receive the proceeds from the sales”.
‘‘Proceeds from sales such as this go into general revenue [which] is used for a number of programs throughout the city,” he said,
He said the council was beginning discussions on its budget for the coming financial year, which would involve projects in the Corrimal area.
‘‘On the question of funding initiatives in the city, the council is in discussions with community associations over the ’wonderwalls’ and façade program in Corrimal,’’ the spokesman said.
