There are echoes of Black Caviar in the unbeaten stallion prospect that hits group 1 level for the first time as a four-year-old without his regular partner because of suspension. In Black Caviar's case it was Ben Melham filling in for Luke Nolen at her seventh start in the Patinack Classic down the Flemington straight in the spring. Deep Field gets there one start earlier but he will be without Dwayne Dunn, who has been in the saddle for three of his five wins.

"The thing for me is to go there and do the right thing by John Hawkes and the owners. I can't really tell how well [Deep Field] is going because I have never been on him," Winks said.

"That is not a bad thing because I will just go out there ride my race up the straight. It is a great opportunity and I just want to do the right thing."

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes noted the Melham comparison on RSN radio in Melbourne on Friday and said the underrated Winks was chosen because he is the right fit for Deep Field.

"He has a great set of hands and we thought he would just suit the horse. There were plenty of others we could have chosen," Hawkes said. "He rode Headwater for us the other day at Moonee Valley and did actually what we asked him to do and when you have success with someone these thing follow."

Deep Field has developed an aura about him with a series of five wins, all as an odds-on favourite, with speed the chief characteristic in each of them. He was still learning his craft last preparation but reached group 2 level down the Flemington straight to finish the campaign.

"Everyone is raving about him and he is probably getting more publicity and attention than he deserves. When you consider Lankan Rupee, which is the world's highest ranked sprinter, is there in the race and almost flying under the radar," Winks said.

"I'm quite excited about the race but it will be probably over in less than 56 seconds. I just need to let him do what he does best."

Winks has a good record in big straight races, winning a Coolmore Stud Stakes on Star Witness and steering Swick to victory in a group 2 for Bart Cummings.

"It is about letting them run their race and not putting too much pressure on them," Winks said. "He has naturally high cruising speed and I will just have to go with him."
