The man’s family has been informed of his death, however a police investigation is continuing into how he died.
Police pulled the man’s body from waters just behind Wollongong Fishermen’s Co-op about 6.30am on Thursday, after it was spotted by multiple parties including two women out for a walk and members of Wollongong Paddlers.
Wollongong police duty officer Detective Sergeant Kevin Bale said police did not know if the man’s death was a result of misadventure or suicide.
He was wearing only underpants and socks when found.
No more than 30 minutes earlier, passers-by saw him alive on land, wearing very little.
‘‘People have seen him running around between 6am and 6.30am in just his underpants,’’ Det Sgt Bale said.
‘‘No-one has actually seen him going into the water.
‘‘We’re investigating the circumstances behind it.’’
He said police had found clothing nearby.
The police investigation will draw on CCTV footage provided by area restaurants.
Adam Hendry, owner of Bombora Seafood Restaurant, said the venue was assisting police with their inquiries.
‘‘Our window washer saw [the man] about 6am,’’ Mr Hendry said.
‘‘He didn’t seem intoxicated, didn’t seem affected by drugs. [The washer] was probably one of the last to see him alive.’’
Police are calling for anyone with information that could assist their investigation to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
