The centenary commemorations began with a flypast by a genuine World War II aircraft, thanks to the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society.
The ceremony officially began as the C-47 Dakota soared twice overhead, to the awe of the 600 schoolchildren below.
The ceremony also included stirring addresses from Mary Clark of the Dapto RSL Sub-Branch, and Petty Officer Tanya Scheskie from HMAS Albatross.
The Wollongong army cadets also attended, forming a catafalque party around the cross for the ceremony. The children wore handmade paper poppies for the occasion.
Brigadier (retired) Philip McNamara presented 11 children with Military Kids Recognition Medallions, which honoured the sacrifices of those with parents in the military.
"It's about recognising the sacrifice that the kids of military parents make. It can be very difficult for those still at home - including children," said Jeff DeBattista, an organiser of the event.
Afterwards, the children were given the opportunity to view wartime artefacts.
"Participating in this kind of day makes it so worthwhile, and creates so much more meaning for them," St John's Principal Vicki Attenborough said.
