Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery has thanked West Dapto citizens for their co-operation during major roadworks, which closed off a major access point to the suburb.

He said the completion of road and bridge works along Shone Avenue, which was reopened in early March but "officially opened" on Monday, was a significant landmark for residents.
"The West Dapto access strategy is a long-term plan that will allow us to accommodate the growing population in this area now and in years to come," he said. "A big part of this strategy was to find ways to improve the roads in West Dapto when it comes to heavy rain and flood events. Last week's downpours and high rainfall gave us the opportunity to see this in action - and the work has paid off.
"Areas that in the past would have been affected with water across the road stayed open."
The work, which involved a bridge over Robins Creek and was the second stage of the Shone Avenue project, is part of a strategy to improve access. When complete, there will be three main entry points into West Dapto - Shone Avenue, Bong Bong Road and Cleveland Street.
