Though some injuries are immediately evident, others can creep up slowly and progressively get worse. If you don't pay attention to both types of injuries, chronic problems can develop. There are a number of warning signs that can start to occur before the injury starts to cause havoc with your body.
Tenderness: If you can reproduce pain by pressing on a bone, ligament or tendon and this pain does not occur on the same point on the other side of your body, you should probably see your health professional.
Joint pain: Joint pain, particularly in the joints of the knee, ankle, elbow and wrist, should never be ignored. Because these joints are not covered by muscle, pain here is rarely of a muscular origin. Joint pain that lasts more than 48 hours requires a professional diagnosis.
Swelling: Swelling is usually quite obvious and can be seen, but occasionally you may just feel as though something is swollen or "full" even though it looks normal. Swelling usually goes along with pain, redness and heat.
Weakness: Compare sides for weakness by performing the same task. A difference in your ability to support your weight is a definite suggestion that the injury needs attention.
Taking note of these vital signs will not only allow your body to heal, it will stop the injury from getting worse and have you back exercising a lot sooner. Always listen to your body. Happy training!
