West Wollongong’s Bethiah Thomas made a successful debut at the Wollongong Eisteddfod on Tuesday.

It was the 12-year-old flautist’s first time on stage in the prestigious competition and, to cap it off, she was awarded first place in the wind instruments solo 12 years and under section.
Bethiah performed Andalouse, composed by Emile Pessard, in front of adjudicator Virginia Taylor and an audience at the Wesley Church On The Mall.
‘‘I was a little bit nervous at first but it was a really fun experience,’’ she said.
‘‘I’m really happy with myself and I definitely think I will do it [the Eisteddfod] again.’’
Bethiah, a year 7 student at Cedars Christian College, has been learning the flute for three years under the tutelage of Suzanne Cowan at the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music. She started playing trumpet with the school band and then switched to flute.
Bethiah is back at the Eisteddfod on Wednesday to compete in the Australian composition wind instruments solo 12 years and under section; and the baroque/classical wind instruments solo 12 years and under section.
