Model casting agents from many of the world's fashion capitals have agreed to come to Wollongong to judge a new competition called Illawarra's Top Model 2015.
It was launched on Thursday as one of three fund-raising activities that are part of the annual Highlights on Mental Health campaign which aims to raise awareness of mental health in the Illawarra and support the Light and Hope Clubhouse in Wollongong.
Among those highlighting the cause this year is 17-year-old Towradgi model Kirra Jones, who made her international modelling debut last year and is heading back to Europe next week.
Ms Jones has given up netball to pursue her modelling career and said it was a real privilege to be an ambassador for the Highlights on Mental Health campaign.
"I think it is just an amazing event and I am just so passionate about it," she said.
"Mental health affects many people. Even in sport I have seen the impacts. So to be a part of this campaign means a lot to me."
NSW Parliamentary Secretary Gareth Ward launched the campaign at Pepe's on the Beach where Light and Hope chairman Professor Frank Deane spoke of the importance of raising awareness and money for the Light and Hope mental health clubhouse in Wollongong.
Destination Wollongong, Wollongong City Council, Wollongong Central, South Coast Private Hospital and IOH are among many supporters of the campaign.
Prof Deane acknowledged the hard work of the campaign founder Robyn David te Velde for all her work.
And Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said the innovative Highlights on Mental Health campaign was just what the new Wollongong Centre needs.
Illawarra's Top Model will be staged during Wollongong Central's Spring Fashion Campaign in September and October.
