The $1.7 million upgrade started in February and UOW manager of transport projects Tom Hunt said it was needed because 30 per cent of people on campus each day arrive by bus.
"It's a massive number of people and the terminus just wasn't up to it so we needed to expand," Mr Hunt said.
The changes include a widening of the footpath where people wait to catch a bus by 2.1 metres, a doubling of the shelter space and a water-bottle filling station.
An extra bus stop has been added, allowing the university's Gwynneville-Keiraville shuttle to stop at the terminus rather than along the campus ring road.
"We also had the issue of people trying to get past the terminus," Mr Hunt said.
"It was on a footpath and so pedestrians and cyclists trying to go along Northfields Avenue had a great deal of difficulty.
"What we've done is put in a shared path behind all of the bus shelters."
The temporary bus stop just to the east will now become a parking bay for buses, whereas they would previously park at the terminus.
Student parking spaces to the west that were taken away for bus parking during the construction have now been returned.
The Shellharbour Route 53 bus and the new Dapto 41 route will still stop on the other side of the road from the terminus.
"We'd like to encourage more people to catch the Dapto Number 41 bus," Mr Hunt said. "We feel there's a lot of people in Unanderra and Figtree who don't realise how handy it it is to get to the university.
