Unanderra Access Group member Bec Schmidt set up the petition on Change.org on Saturday night and it has already gained more than 250 signatures.
‘‘Everybody using this will have an issue with these stairs at some stage in their life, if not now later on,’’ the petition states.
‘‘Let’s change this problem! Please show your support for this long overdue upgrade to make Unanderra train station accessible for everyone!’’
Ms Schmidt said the group was hoping an online petition would attract more support than one circulated in Unanderra alone.
‘‘We want as many people as we can to get on board,’’ Ms Schmidt said.
‘‘We can get a lot of people who are in other areas to sign the petition and if they don’t necessarily want to come to the meetings as well, that’s fine.’’
She also said it was important that as many people as possible signed the petition because, otherwise, it might indicate the community support for improved access wasn’t strong.
‘‘The more people we can get signing this and supporting it, the more chance we have of putting a case forward where there’s a need for something to be done at Unanderra station about the access,’’ she said.
