Windang Bowling Club know all about the highs and lows of State Pennant Finals after losing their opening sectional match 12 months ago to the team that went on to take the Grade 6 flag.
Windang are back as Illawarra Zone 16 Grade 6 champions for the State Finals at Northmead BC, and hope Lady Luck holds true after another terrific season of pennants.
Windang had two teams in Illawarra Grade 6 with their 6A side finishing a close-up second to Collies/ORB and the other side, skipped by John Penno, Graham Smith and Paul Cable winning 6B.
The 6B champions lost only one match all season and continued their good form into the finals, beating the strong Warilla side 66-37 in the major semi-final and winning the flag by beating Collies/ORB 68-57 in the grand final at BC.
Skip Penno said the momentum in the major semi-final against Warilla shifted over the final 19 ends.
"We were playing at Corrimal and it was tight as. It was all square at 42 ends and then we just pulled away," Penno said.
The final was also tough, with Windang having to fend off a spirited fightback from the 6A champs Collies/ORB
"We had a pretty good lead. Graham's [Smith] rink was doing well and while I was down on my rink we looked to be doing the job," Penno said.
"Then things turned and they made a run, and it was really only the last three ends we came away and made it safe."
Penno said four squad members were part of the side which won the Illawarra Grade 6 flag 12 months ago and might have had a serious tilt at the state flag were it not for a first up sectional loss to Lawson.
"You lose by a shot to the team which goes on and wins the state flag - and they blitzed it - and you are left wondering," Penno said.
"You can't tell what is going to happen from match to match at the State Finals."
Penno played in a State Finals in Grade 6 for Windang a few years ago at Lismore and lost the grand final to Picton.
"They only had two grades. A top team and a sixes and it's hard with so many really good players ending up in their No 6 team. But that's the nature of pennants across the state - the standard between the grades changes quite a bit."
Penno says the squad has plenty of experience, while some of the less-experienced players, including the Cable brothers Phil and Paul and Shellharbour recruit Robbie Jordan, have made a significant contribution.
"Most of our guys are in their 60s and have played for years and those who are newer to bowls are natural sportsman and have picked it up well.
"We're a very solid, happy team and whenever one rink needs a lift we look across to our mates and get a big effort out of the other rinks."
Windang face Macksville (Zone 14), Pittwater Memorial (Zone 9) and Raymond Terrace (Zone 2) in their section at Northmead.
The final will be played at Merrylands BC.
