A 15 year old was with three friends on Parramatta Street around 2pm when they got into an argument with the man, before he allegedly pulled out a small blade and slashed the boy on his torso and arms.
Inspector Robert Vergano said officers arrived on scene within minutes of being called though the offender had run off.
‘‘We have received some evidence, statements at this stage ... but we’re definitely appealing for any more people with information to come forward,’’ he said.
The victim was taken to Shoalhaven Hospital for treatment of non life threatening injuries.
The attacker is described as medium build, Caucasian appearance, and between 175 - 180cm.
