James, 19, was left fighting for his life after his Holden Commodore came off a sweeping bend on Flinders Street early August 17, and slammed into a tree.
Lake Illawarra High School student Georja Balfour, 15, was in the front passenger seat and died at the scene.
On Saturday, hundreds of people released helium balloons in Georja’s name, filling the sky over Boronia Park at Windang with rainbow.
The siblings’ parents, Kelly and Greg Balfour, were among the crowd.
The tribute was organised by friends as a way to raise money towards the cost of Georja’s funeral.
It was also a chance for the people who had loved Georja to share their loss, said friend Christinea Wilson.
‘‘We all got together in the middle of the field, counted to three and let a balloon go, just for her,’’ Christinea said.
‘‘Rest in peace, Georja.’’
James Balfour was airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical condition in the accident’s aftermath.
His condition has since been downgraded to stable.
‘‘He’s still got a long road ahead of him but he’s doing well,’’ Christinea said.
A 16-year-old Primbee boy who was seated in the car’s back seat also suffered serious injuries.
He left Wollongong Hospital last week.
