“This is the biggest petition that's ever been delivered to the NSW Parliament from the Illawarra,” Shellharbour MP Anna Watson said.
“This is something that is widely and deeply felt throughout our community.”
Keira MP Ryan Park said: “The livelihood of thousands of people are tied up in the future of BlueScope”.
“We will work as hard as we can to try and push for the maximum amount of steel, Australian steel, in every NSW Government procurement project,” Mr Park said.
The petition could be debated in late October or early November.
“We're nearly at the eleventh-hour with whatever decision is going to be made, so we've got to get a wriggle on,” Member for Heathcote Lee Evans said.
