The IRT Foundation is behind The Good Life, Australia’s first dedicated channel for over 55s which was launched on Thursday to coincide with the International Day of Older Persons.
Hosted by Wollongong residents Pete Gatwood and Gwen Wilson, the 30-minute monthly episodes will provide a range of news, finance, lifestyle and profile pieces.
It features seniors as reporters, and also includes Illawarra talent in some episodes such as Figtree soccer stalwart Peter Webster.
IRT chief executive Nieves Murray said the channel was one of the foundation’s education and advocacy initiatives.
‘’The channel aims to inform, educate and inspire,’’ Ms Murray said.
‘’We want to shift people’s perceptions about ageing, including seniors’ own perceptions about themselves.
‘’Instead of thinking ‘I’m too old to do that’ … we want seniors to start thinking ‘I can, and I will, do that’.’’
Recent research by Screen Australia revealed that the over 55s are one of the fastest growing groups subscribing to YouTube.
However Ms Murray said there was little non-commercial Australian content available for this age group.
She hoped The Good Life would fill that gap, and show everyone the great contributions made by seniors.
‘’The over 55s have a lot of life to live, and a lot to contribute as volunteers, mentors and more,’’ Ms Murray said.
‘’We want to help break down stereotypes and hopefully create an environment where older people can thrive.’’
IRT Foundation manager Toby Dawson said a Facebook community would also be developed around the new channel.
‘’We know that social isolation is an issue for many older Australians,’’ he said.
‘’So we’re hoping The Good Life will give them a reason to start or continue engaging in social media and online communities.’’
