Wollongong Salvation Army Captain Phil Inglis said last year many parents were in tears as they selected gifts for their children.
‘’There’s often a cultural expectation that we spend lots of money on food and toys at Christmas, and many parents struggle with that financially,’’ he said.
‘’Last year we saw parents shedding tears of joy as our volunteers helped them select gifts for their children. Witnessing their happiness, and knowing the enjoyment the kids will get from the gifts, makes our efforts so worthwhile.’’
Families in need are invited to come to the Burelli Street centre on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 10am and 1pm to register for the toy drive.
The Salvos welcomes new toys from the Kmart wishing tree, local businesses and individuals.
Food hampers and vouchers are also distributed during the festive season.
