Mr Chamberlain is the Dapto club’s graffiti co-ordinator and is often armed with a paintbrush at 6am working alongside Rotarians such as Barry Hemley. 

They are Wollongong’s graffiti busters acting at the request of the city council to remove unwanted and weird things in local neighbourhoods.

Wollongong City Council called in the Dapto Rotarians to paint over graffiti in 2014 when it took over responsibility of traffic control boxes from Roads and Maritime Services.

In many cases the boxes have been painted by artists before only to be the target of graffiti again.

The Rotarians paint over the unwanted art with an undercoat so a council employed artist can come along and do another attractive mural.

Dapto Rotary Club has been involved in removing graffiti in public places around Wollongong for more than five years now.

“I removed graffiti from 32 sites last year,” Mr Chamberlain said.

That was on fences, signs, buildings and other structures around Wollongong.

“We get supported by the Attorney General,” Mr Chamberlain said.

“And Dulux supply all the paint for nothing.”
