The alleged attacker – then aged 17 – had earlier posted a picture to social media of himself with a gun and boasted about the weapon's authenticity.
Jye McWatters, 19, was in the process of taking out an apprehended violence order against the younger teen when he was shot dead at his Kippax Street yard early Saturday.
On Monday, detectives interviewed the younger teen. He has been released without charge.
Homicide Squad Detective Chief Inspector David Laidlaw said the April conflict was one of several lines of ongoing police inquiry.
"We have identified a number of parties he [Mr McWatters] was in conflict with,” he said.
“Nobody’s cleared. We’re treating them equally.”
Mr McWatters was hospitalised on April 19 with a broken nose, a fractured cheek bone and cuts to his face and upper lip.
At the time, police attributed the injuries to a pre-dawn attack by a 17-year-old boy.
The younger teen allegedly confronted McWatters at his front door just after midnight on April 18, lunged at him and struck him multiple times to the face with a small hammer.
The impact caused Mr McWatters to fall backwards onto his grandmother and they both fell to the ground.
Those matters resulted in charges that are still before the children’s court.
The application for an apprehended violence order was to return to court on January 11.
A temporary order prohibited the younger teen from coming within 100 metres of Mr McWatters’ home.
Police have not located the firearm used in Saturday’s shooting.
Homicide police have ruled out misadventure and suicide as causes of death.
