This is called the training “plateau”. This plateau can be caused by many reasons including:
- Over training
- Injury that the athlete/client is suffering from
- Boredom/lack of enthusiasm
- Lack of energy
Plateaus will cause much frustration for the individual as progress is halted, and often reversed.
The potential for injury is heightened and the athlete’s/client’s motivation levels start to suffer.
Some training tips and techniques to avoid a “plateau” include:
- Giving the athlete/client a recovery week where they train less frequently and with less intensity
- Getting regular treatment such as massage and physiotherapy
- Changing the style of program
- Changing the training environment
- Changing certain exercises or training styles
Overall, changing a number of these variables will help the athlete mentally and physically to ensure they can break through the lull and periods of underperforming to eventually begin progressing and achieving again.
