A new eight-storey apartment building is likely to boast some of the best views in Wollongong, with developers proposing to raze two old red brick houses fronting the beachside Lang Park.

Martin Morris and Jones have lodged plans with Wollongong council to build a 13-unit complex in place of the aged dwellings at 2-4 Parkside Avenue.
The cul-de-sac development would incorporate a roof top terrace and pool area, as well as basement parking.
The apartments would be sized between 123 and 254 square metres. They would mainly be three-bedroom homes with a four-bedroom penthouse planned.
“One bedroom and studio sized apartments are not a desirable market product for such a premier location,” the plans said.
The developers have requested several variations to the council’s standards regarding building depth and bulk, setbacks and building separation.
The plans say the development will provide “a unique, but contemporary visual image” and will maximise sunlight and private open space through courtyards and balconies.
The applicants have described the block as “premier in terms of coastal urban living” noting it is on the “doorstep” of the Blue Mile and close to the city centre.
“(Many) of the properties within the locality have been subject to redevelopment in recent years, and it is expected this type of revitalisation and renewal will continue into the future…” the plans said.
While the building would be double the height of many nearby buildings, the surrounding area – especially along Harbour Street and opposite the Wollongong cathedral – is undergoing significant change. Several new buildings are planned or under construction.
For instance, work has begun on a nine-storey, 23-unit block replacing the Harbour Street tennis courts.
Nearby, a block of the houses at 17-21 Harbour Street sold late last year for $5.6 million. A development company, Harbour Square Pty Ltd, bought the site and is reportedly planning to build a high rise development.
The plans will be on public exhibition through Wollongong City Council’s website until February 22.
