Thompson is a five-time Indigenous All-Star and a tireless advocate for his people in his role as a mentor with Mission Australia.

He’s seen the clash grow from a one-off game to a full week-long cultural celebration and believes critics of the concept don’t see the full picture.

‘‘I don’t think [critics] realise how important it is for our culture,’’ Thompson said.

‘‘It’s a big thing for our culture and for our people. It’s a great week where we get out there in the community.

‘‘Rugby league has a massive voice in the community and we get some important messages across.

‘‘It’s also a gathering for our people. We keep our traditions we talk about culture and we go into camp with a lot of younger guys coming through.

‘‘It really means a lot to us. It’s easy for people who are not are part of it to say it doesn’t matter but it something special.

‘‘I think it’s grown and every year it gets bigger and better.

‘‘It’s a great game for rugby league, it’s really good for our people and it’s a great concept from the NRL.’’

For Thompson the match also provides the chance to win some bragging rights over left-edge partner Gareth Widdop who will turn out for the World All-Stars

‘‘I’m looking forward to going up against Gaz, I’ll be reminding of it every day if we win,’’ he said.
