A drunk Sanctuary Point man has escaped punishment for ‘riding’ a shopping trolley down a Nowra street while his mate lay passed out inside it.

Corey Rohan James reached speeds of up to 30km/h in the trolley before it crashed into a parked car, bringing his joy ride to an abrupt end.
The court heard there were no groceries inside the trolley, only one of James’ friends, who was so intoxicated he had passed out.
James pleaded guilty in Nowra court on Wednesday to driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The court heard police spotted James with a Coles shopping trolley in Kinghorne Street just after 1.30am on November 14.
James was seen standing behind the trolley, which contained the sleeping passenger.
Police said James was near Junction Street when he began pushing the trolley in a southerly direction.
Officers saw James hope onto the ‘vehicle’ and ‘ride’ it down the road as it reached an estimated speed of 30km/h.
However, the ride was cut short when the trolley crashed into a parked car, smashing the vehicle’s rear vision mirror.
The trolley then veered into the footpath and collided with a steel plant barrier.
James, who police said was highly affected by alcohol, was thrown off the trolley, while the passenger was stuck inside.
James severed an artery in his finger as a result of the crash, but refused hospital treatment.
Police were able to rouse the other occupant and he got out of the trolley.
In court on Wednesday, Magistrate Gabriel Fleming found the offence proven but did not record a conviction against James.
However, the 21-year-old did not escape punishment for a further charge of drink driving, which occurred on January 15 at Sanctuary Point.
The court heard James returned an breath analysis of 0.122 – almost two and a half times the the legal alcohol limit for fully licensed drivers.
Magistrate Fleming fined James $900 and disqualified him from driving for six months.
