Shortly before 2am, a vehicle travelling on the Old Hume Highway left the road and hit a tree.
The 17-year-old Southern Highlands female driver died at the scene.
A 15-year-old Southern Highlands male passenger was airlifted to Liverpool Hospital with serious injuries.
He is now in a stable condition.
Acting Inspector Paul Brodie appealed for any witnesses to come forward and contact police.
“It’s a little bit too early to know what happened, but the road was wet at the time,” he said.
“Police attached to the Hume Local Area Command will continue investigations and start preparing a report for the coroner.”
