What will the decision to move forward with plans to build 12 new submarines in Adelaide mean for industry in the Illawarra? That question will be on the agenda when the winning bidder visits Wollongong to speak with the Illawarra Innovative Industry Network (i3net) at TAFE Illawarra’s Trade & Technology Faculty next week. The Australian Government’s announcement that French company DCNS was the international partner who would design and build the new submarines under the multi-billion dollar SEA 1000 Future Submarine Program couldn’t have been better timed, according to i3net executive officer Tony Green. Mr Green said DCNS Australia has already agreed to visit Wollongong on on May 13 to speak to the manufacturers and engineering firms about the opportunities for work in the Illawarra.

“We have been talking with DCNS for some time now and..their supply chain manager will be presenting to our members about opportunities under their Australian Industry Involvement Plan,” he said.
“DCNS advised us that the “Government’s considerations also included their through-life support and Australian Industry Involvement Plan”. Not only will this be a good opportunity for our members to hear about DCNS’s Industry Involvement Plan it will be a great opportunity for the region to showcase its industrial capability. With the Industry Breakfast being held in the Trade & Technology Faculty of TAFE Illawarra it will also be a good opportunity to display the high level of training provided locally.”
