Oakley Naughton broke down in tears when Magistrate Michael Stoddart told her she wouldn’t be leaving Silverwater women’s prison anytime soon thanks to her “appalling” behaviour on night of April 3.

The court heard Naughton and a friend came to be in possession of a the man’s mobile phone shortly after he lost it at the Grand Hotel in the early hours the morning.

The man used a friend’s phone to ring his own mobile, which was answered by Naughton.

When asked how she’d come to have his phone, Naughton said she’d bought it.

A friend of the victim began talking to Naughton on the mobile, at which time she demanded payment for the return of the phone.

She and the friend agreed to meet outside the 7-Eleven on Crown Street, however Naughton failed to show.

The duo rang her again and the venue was changed to the Piccadilly Centre.

They eventually caught up with Naughton outside Wollongong Railway Station, with the victim asking to see the phone to verify it was his before any exchange took place.

However, Naughton refused and pulled out a crude knife-type of weapon, which the court heard was a nail file, and threatened to stab the men instead.

She and a male friend then jumped into a waiting car and left the area.

Naughton was arrested about two weeks later.

She pleaded guilty to a charge of demanding property with menaces in court, with her lawyer saying Naughton abuse of illegal drugs had led her to commit the offence.

Magistrate Stoddart said Naughton was fortunate not to be facing more serious charges.

“It’s lucky someone didn’t get hurt,” he said.

“It’s a most serious charge and there needs to be serious consequences.”

Naughton will be released on parole in October.
