With little current and plenty of bait about, the billfish activity there last Sunday bordered on insane to say the least and had anglers chomping at the bit to take a drive down south until reports filtered through late Sunday that the Geelong Star was trawling up the masses of bait schools on which these fish had been feasting.
Without the bait the fish will move on in search of bait elsewhere and had many anglers cursing.
Don’t forget you’ve only got until this Sunday May 8, to have your say on the Hawkesbury Shelf marine bioregion assessment which will include a lot of lockouts for recreational anglers.
More locally, Kimberly Stolk found a hot bite on marlin also last weekend when she hooked up to a beast of a fish estimated around the 200kg mark out from Bellambi.
Kim fought the fish for an astonishing 8.5 hours before the leader wore through and she reported seeing another free swimmer whilst fighting her fish.
Snapper are getting progressively thicker as the cuttlefish move in for their annual spawning season and Troy Parsons got into some good reds last week with a hot session on Friday, boating a lot of fish to the 4kg mark and all on soft plastics in about 50 metres depth line.
Flathead fishos found good numbers and size last weekend from various sand drifts like Stanwell Park and Bulli Sands, although out wider, the current was running pretty hard making it a little trying.
Beaches again fished well last week with plenty of bream and flathead about, live worms had the whiting in a frenzy with plenty of solid fish being pulled.
The mulloway were a bit quiet with only whispers of a few school sized fish but things should improve with the upcoming moon phase.
Scott Leare and Hugh Kearney stretched their arms last weekend on the local kingie population, landing a few fish to the metre mark on trolled squid.
