The 44-year-old driver suffered cuts and bruises to his face and body after a man leaned through his open car window and repeatedly belted him.
The assault occurred on Campbell Street about 10pm April 16, after two men hailed down the driver.
Wollongong Detective Inspector Brad Ainsworth said one of the men lashed out when the driver said he was en route to another booking.
“The cab driver was just going about his normal business. It appears he’s stopped to offer some assistance, to let them know he couldn’t take them in his cab at that point, but that he’d come back if they wanted to wait,” Det Insp Ainsworth said.
“The man has punched him through the window.
“It was unprovoked. It was just a gutless attack really.”
The assault was partially captured on the dashcam of a passing motorist, who is assisting police with their investigation.
The taxi driver attended hospital as a result of his injuries.
