The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was molested by school career’s advisor David Croxon in late 2014 after she went to him for help compiling a resume.
Croxon, who was living in Flinders with his young family at the time, groped the teen’s breasts and fondled her genitals in an empty staff room kitchen, before threatening to kill himself if she told anyone.
He continued to pursue her at the start of the 2015 school year, taking her to a deserted classroom to discuss how they could see each other privately.
He then digitally raped the teen, while telling her “I know this is wrong but I just want a taste”.
The distraught teen told a friend about the abuse and the pair reported Croxon to the principal.
Croxon was arrested later the same day.
He denied the accusations for a year until pleading guilty to charges of aggravated sexual assault and aggravated indecent assault on morning of his trial in March.
During sentencing proceedings in Wollongong District Court on Friday, the victim said she had been a virgin before the assaults.
“No one had ever touched me there … I felt violated,” she said.
“What happened was not normal; what he did was not normal.”
The girl said she often had trouble sleeping, but when she was able to drift off, would wake up feeling anxious and upset.
“It’s like I can’t be on my own anymore,” she said, adding she grieved for the toll the matter had taken on her family.
“They feel guilty for not being able to protect me, I see them look at me differently now.”
Croxon also gave evidence during the proceedings, claiming his behaviour had been the result of a “brain snap” during a particularly difficult time in his life.
“My marriage wasn’t working, I hated my job, I hated my life, I wasn’t thinking straight,” he said.
Croxon also told the court at the time of the abuse he firmly believed the victim was “consenting” to the sexual interactions.
“In my mind yes, that was my opinion on the day,” he replied when asked if he thought the teen had not only consented by was “enjoying it”.
Corxon was remanded in custody to be sentenced at a later date.
