With the ground barely dry after the deluge which hit the Illawarra a fortnight ago, preparations are underway to make sure this weekend’s rain doesn’t cause any further damage.
According to the Bureau of Meteorlogy, there is a “very high” chance of rain from Saturday through to Monday in Wollongong.
The bureau also says another east coast low could form off the coast over the weekend.
While conditions are not expected to be as bad as the June 4 and 5 weekend – where parts of southern Wollongong flooded and the combination of the low pressure cell and king tides caused significant damage along the coast – agencies have been steeling themselves for possible trouble.
A limited number of sandbags are available at Wollongong City Council depots for those worried about flooding, at the request of the SES.
The depot locations are Montague Street, North Wollongong , Nolan Street, Unanderra and Princes Highway, Bulli.
The weekend’s temperatures will be cool, with top forecasts of 18 degrees.
Meantime, the council on Friday reopened Wollongong’s Continental Pool, after it was completely inundated in the previous storms.
Recreation Services Manager Mark Bond said council staff had emptied and cleaned all three pools in the complex, removing more than 50 tonnes of sand, mostly by shovel.
The southern concourse of the 50m pool will remain barricaded off, as the council needs to ensure its structural integrity before completing repairs.
