Chris Lamont will take over the duties of former CEO Debra Murphy.
As well as overseeing the work of the business chamber, Mr Lamond will also be in charge of the newly established advisory body Illawarra First.
“Illawarra First is all about infrastructure, all about the industry of tomorrow - what will get the Illawarra going in terms of employment and growth in the years to come, and the business chamber is about that ongoing support for business.”
Mr Lamond said these days people considering a new job are not just looking at what goes on in the workplace but also where it is located.
“I think, more than ever, both businesses and individuals are looking for a lifestyle that incorporates their dreams and aspirations,” Mr Lamond said.
“Gone are the days where we assess our career choices just by looking at the job that operates on 8-5. They’re looking at the whole package and I think the Illawarra has a good story there.”
He felt lifestyle considerations was something the Illawarra could really capitalise on.
“I was there on the weekend and you can’t help but be really impressed with what a great lifestyle the Illawarra has to offer in terms or retaining staff,” Mr Lamond said.
“That’s a big issue for Sydney, for Melbourne, for Brisbane, to keep staff in an area that is both affordable and has unique benefits.
“Having worked in big cities it is really difficult from an affordability point of view, from a ‘crazy busy feel’ point of view for young families to stay and work.
“The Illawarra has a lifestyle and some unique beauty in terms of beaches and scenery that are really good starting point.”
Chris Lamont was previously chief of staff to federal Small Business Minister Fran Bailey, CEO for Canberra-based Goodwin age care facilities and worked for the Housing Industry Association and the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association.
He will take up his new position on August 1.
