A first half brace from former Sydney FC midfielder Hagi Gligor had Olympic in the box seat to consign the Wolves to their sixth straight defeat, but the visitors were outplayed in the second half.
Nico Bernal got a goal back for Wollongong from the penalty spot three minutes after half time and gave the Wolves hope of scoring an equaliser.
They made raid after raid into the Olympic half but were unable to find a way past Olympic keeper Paul Henderson. The defeat their win-less run to 12 matches, much to the dismay of Wolves coach Jacob Timpano.
“I thought we dominated from start to finish,” he said.
“We made Olympic adjust the way they play in the first half but again they got a couple of soft goals albeit good finishes.
“I said to [Paul Henderson] that was the sort of performance he used to do back in his glory days. What do you do, we threw everything at them and he came up with three or four top line saves.”
Perhaps more alarming than the defeat is the club’s squad crisis for next weekend’s massive match against Parramatta.
Sam Matthews late red-card as well as yellow cards to Zac MacKenzie, Ricky Zucco and Danny Lazarevski rules all four players out.
With Brett Wilson, Peter Simonoski and James O’Rourke already sidelined, the Wolves squad will be stretched to the brink.
Wolves lead Blacktown Spartans by 12 points in the Club Championship.
